What we collect

When you visit The Local Media, we gather certain information to understand how you engage with our publication and to improve your experience. This includes data you provide directly—such as your name, email address, and preferences when you subscribe or contribute—and information collected automatically through your browser and device.

Automated collection includes your IP address, browser type, pages visited, time spent reading, and the links you follow. We also collect information about your location at a general level to help us serve relevant local content and community features. If you create an account or submit content, we store the details you provide.

How we use it

Your information helps us deliver The Local Media as intended. We use it to send you newsletters and updates you've requested, to personalise your experience based on your interests and location, and to understand which stories and communities resonate most with our readers. This insight guides our editorial decisions and helps us create better local content.

We also use your data to communicate with contributors and advertisers, to prevent fraud and maintain security, and to comply with legal obligations. If you've opted in, we may use your information to notify you about new features, special events, or opportunities to contribute to The Local.

Cookies and tracking

The Local Media uses cookies to remember your preferences, keep you logged in, and track how you navigate our site. These are essential for the publication to function properly. We also use analytics tools to measure traffic patterns and reader behaviour, which helps us understand what content matters to our community.

Third-party services we work with—including analytics providers and advertising partners—may also set cookies on your device. These allow them to deliver relevant advertisements and measure campaign performance. You can control cookie settings through your browser, though disabling them may affect your ability to use certain features of The Local.

Your rights

You have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data. You can update your account information at any time, unsubscribe from communications, or request that we remove your data entirely. If you believe your information has been misused, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

We retain your data only as long as necessary to provide our services and fulfil legal requirements. If you have questions about how your information is being used or wish to exercise any of these rights, please contact us directly.
